BIOGRAPHY: Eudoxia was a strong-willed woman who exerted a powerfulinfluence over her ineffectual husband. A Christian, she nonetheless cameinto conflict with John Chrysostom, the partriarch of Constantinople, whocriticized the idle, frivolity of thecourt. She retaliated by sending himinto exile. She died of a miscarriage.

BIOGRAPHY: Eudoxia (d. 6 Oct 404), wife of, and a powerful influenceover, the Eastern Roman emperor Arcadius (reigned 383-408).

BIOGRAPHY: Her father was a Frankish chieftain and one-term Roman consul(385) named Bauto. The marriage (27 April 395) of Arcadius to Eudoxia wasarranged by Arcadius' corrupt minister, the eunuch Eutropius, who hadsupported the match in order to undercut the position of a politicalrival. But Eudoxia came to resent being dominated by Eutropius, and in399 she helped to bring about his downfall. The period of Eudoxia's mostdecisive influence over her ineffectual husband dates from herdesignation as augusta on 9 Jan 400.

BIOGRAPHY: Although an earnest Christian, she quarreled bitterly withJohn Chrysostom, partriarch of Constantinople, who attacked her and thefrivolity of her court in outspoken terms. In 404 she expelled him fromhis see and sent him into exile. Shortly afterward Eudoxia died from amiscarriage. But she had borne Arcadius four daughters and a son, whobecame the emperor Theodosius II (reigned 408-450). One of the daughters,Pulcheria, was regent for Theodosius II for several years.
