Famine - Irrigation

Built (or extended) a massive irrigation system to extend both the numberof harvests per year and the area usable for agriculture. This consistedof a great canal feeding two great lakes, and various channels, embankments and aqueducts.
The canal (Bahr Yousef, The Sea of Joseph) had a controlled intake at theNile from which water was carried some 130 kilometers to the first greatreservoir.
This first reservoir (around Birket el-Qarun) fed a second much greaterreservoir.
This second great reservoir (possibly including modern El-Gharaq andEl-Mala'a) was lake Moeris, named after Pharaoh Mery-Ku-Re of the XthDynasty. Its circumference was said to be 3600 stades (over 575kilometers), and its depth an average fifty fathoms (over 90 meters).

Imhotep?

As noted by historians, etc., there are a number of curious parallelsbetween Joseph and the chamberlain of Pharaoh Djoser of the thirddynasty, Imhotep (later revered as a god of healing).

The main objection is the reign of Djoser apparently being much earlierthan the time of Joseph.

parallels:

- there seems to be no record of Imhotep in the early part of Djoser'sreign; Joseph was also obscure until his rise to lord chamberlain.
- Imhotep's administration was largely associated with Sakkara, and thereis an old local tradition among the Egyptians of Sakkara that the Pyramidof Teta was built near the old site of the prison where Joseph wasimprisoned (and is thus known by them as the prison pyramid)
- both were associated with the interpretation of dreams (though Imhotepin healing only)
- both gave the troubled Pharaoh advice on an impending famine, havingfirst consulted their God (there is some evidence that the huge, open air'burial chambers' in the Step Pyramid of Sakkara are actually silos andno real evidence they are burial chambers)
- both recommended storing part (a tax) of each harvest to survive aseven year famine
- both were titled in Egypt the sons of the God over all gods - creatorof all things (Ptah)
- both were second only to pharoh (uncommon for a non-noble)
- both coordinated many building projects
- both were high priests of On (presuming Joseph suceeded hisfather-in-law)
- Imhotep was a renowned physician, and Joseph was master of thephysicians (Gen 50:2)
- Ptah-hotep (either Imhotep or a successor) is recorded as living to110, the same age as Joseph. More significant, the same document recordsthe honours and gratitude of Pharaoh 'as to none before' him; thus muchmore likely to be Imhotep than his lesser successors.
- Imhotep's huge healing complex at Sakkara contains (in addition tomummified bulls and about a million mummified ibis!) a coffin which wasempty when opened, even though it had been sealed shut; the remains ofJoseph were taken (as he requested on his deathbed) by the Israelis whenthey left Egypt on the Exodus.

Imhotep's many titles include:

the Son of Ptah (God over all gods, creator of all things)
Chancellor of the King of Lower Egypt
Chief under the King
Hereditary Lord
Administrator of the Great Palace
High Priest of Heliopolis (On)
Imhotep the Builder
the Sculptor
Maker of Stone Vases

other achievements:

- started the use of cut stone (e.g. Djoser's step pyramid) in building, not just the baked mud bricks used at that time.
