St. Margaret b. ca 1045, Probably Hungary d. 16 Nov 1093, Edinburgh Castle, Scotland, Age: 48 br. Dunfermline Abbey, Fife, Scotland Canonised 1250 and her fea st dayis 16th November. In 1057 she arrived at the English cour t of Edward theConfessor. Ten years later she was in exile afte r William defeatedHarold at the Battle of Hastings. She fled t o Scotland where she wasmarried against her wishes to King Malc olm to whom she bore six sons andtwo daughters. Her unlerned a nd boorish husband grew daily more gracefuland Christian unde r the queen's graceful influence. Her remains wereremoved to E scorial Spain and her head Douai, France. Famous Scots - St Margaret (1046-1093) Margaret was a descendant of King Alfred. Her father, Edward, wa s exiledduring the reign of King Canute and Margaret was born i n Hungary. Herbrother had a claim to the throne of England bu t came to terms withWilliam the Conqueror.
The family were headed back to the continent from Northumbria wh en theirship was blown off course and landed in Fife. The Scott ish King, MalcolmIII (known as Canmore) gave protection to th e family and marriedMargaret. Malcolm was devoted to her and a s a result she exercisedconsiderable influence. She introduce d the English language into thecourt in place of the Gaelic spo ken by her husband. She set the agendafor the church in Scotlan d and as a result the Roman church made inroadsinto the Celti c Church in the north of the country.
Margaret was very pious, caring for the poor and orphans and dam aged herown health by repeated fasting and abstinence. In 1093 , as she lay onher deathbed after a long illness, she was tol d that her husband andeldest son had been ambushed and killed a t the Battle of Alnwick,Northumbia. She thanked God for the pai n this had brought her as itmight cleanse her own sins.
She is buried in Dunfermline Abbey and was canonised by the Pop e in1251. St Margaret's Chapel (illustrated above) in Edinburg h Castle isthe oldest surviving building there and was construc ted by King David I,Margaret's son. Change Date: 18 JAN 2004
